Definition
Under direction, is responsible for reviewing building plans and other related plans and specifications for commercial and residential structures to determine conformance with governing codes, requirements and relevant ordinances; performs closely related duties as required.
Examples of Work

Reviews building plans and other related specifications prepared by architects and engineers to determine conformance with governing codes, requirements and relevant ordinances;
Reviews and processes applications for permits to alter existing buildings or to erect new buildings;
Reviews and files project layout drawings or approved plans;
Confers with building officials and/or other superiors and recommends solutions to various problems concerning building plans and specifications and related provisions of building construction codes;
Responds and provides information to property owners, architects, contractors or others concerning building code related problems and inquiries;
Prepares correspondence for the signature of superiors as required;
Initiates correspondence such as plan approval letters or correction letters;
Consults with architects and engineers on preliminary reviews of new building plans to ensure conformance with governing codes, requirements and relevant ordinances;
Attends required training sessions or classes in order to maintain a valid certification as a Building Plan Examiner; keeps abreast of ongoing changes in the building industry;
May provide assistance in reviewing building plans for compliance with the Residential Code of Ohio as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
Possession of a valid State of Ohio Certificate of Competency as a Master Plans Examiner, valid State of Ohio certification as a Residential Plans Examiner (or Residential Building Official), and possession of a valid professional registration as an architect or engineer. Substitution(s): A letter of interim approval as a Master Plans Examiner from the State of Ohio may substitute for the above referenced certifications. When the letter of interim approval is substituted, a valid State of Ohio Certificate as a Master Plans Examiner and Residential Plans Examiner must be obtained by the end of the probationary period.

Architect III– Certified licensed architect plus a minimum of eight years of architecture related experience. Fully competent architect in all conventional aspects of architectural designs for projects of medium to large size and complexity. Responsible for specific technical design aspects of an assigned major project, including investigation, evaluation and recommendation of design solutions that best meets the client’s needs. Provides professional architectural consultation in the planning, design, and coordination of large complex projects. Independently applies advanced architectural concepts and designs. Carries out complex or novel assignments requiring the development of new or improved techniques and procedures. May provide technical guidance to less experienced architects. Project size differentiates this position from a senior architect.
Essential Functions:
- Licensed Architect who works independently and is responsible for finished plans, specifications and approval of materials and construction
- Participates in the conceptual design and provides full support through the entire project
- Coordinates on the planning and development of construction and design document production, and provide technical expertise to ensure coordinated and high-quality documents
- Responsible to conduct construction administration duties, such as site visits, RFI responses, submittals, and punch list reviews
- Liaises with Project Management, other architects, and consultants

Work Environment
- This position operates in a professional open office environment with low to moderate noise levels including collaborative work areas for team meetings. Building construction sites may include varying temperatures, wind, dust, and noise levels and may include hazardous and dirty conditions.
