Tour Series: Upper Arlington Community Center

Register.

Situated in the center of the Upper Arlington community, the Bob Crane Community Center is a multi-generational hub providing the community with recreational, social, and educational space. The design solution responds to the challenges of stacking large program areas on top of each other while creating an intuitive connection between each of the levels. High usage spaces such as fitness and aquatics were located on the first and second levels while the MAC (Multipurpose) gym and double court gym were located on upper levels. Other support spaces such as the Senior and Teen Areas were then threaded throughout the building. To support the design goal of capturing as much natural light within the interior environment, an abundance of glazing was utilized on the exterior as well as the inclusion of outdoor spaces on roof tops which support both social and program needs.

Given the challenges of the long and narrow site, the design team spent significant time with the client as well as the Upper Arlington community in developing a stacking and programming strategy that was responsive to their vision for the community center. The transparent engagement approach supported continuous community input, town hall meetings, unique hands-on activities, and focus groups for key programming areas and design considerations.

The project is currently under construction, scheduled to be complete in the Spring/Summer of 2025. PPE is required for all attendees including hard hat, vest, and closed-toe shoes.
