In the heart of historic Westerville, Ohio, the 28 S State Street renovation project blends the city’s prohibition-era legacy with contemporary design. Occupying a former post office building, the new restaurant and speakeasy celebrate the building’s storied past while creating a vibrant new culinary destination for the community.

The renovation preserved the original architectural character and details, showcasing salvaged elements like the teller gates from the post office. The design seamlessly integrates modern finishes and furnishings, creating a unique and compelling atmosphere. Outdoor dining spaces create connection to the surrounding neighborhood, fostering community engagement.

This project provides a fascinating case study in adaptive reuse. The design team carefully balanced historic charm with contemporary hospitality, preserving original details while creating a fresh, updated aesthetic. The result is a one-of-a-kind destination that pays homage to Westerville’s prohibition-era past while embracing the vibrancy of the present day.

The historic 1935 post office building features a High Bank Restaurant on the ground floor and a speakeasy bar, P.O. Box 21, in the basement.
