Panelist: Thomas King from Huber Engineered Woods
Thomas King developed an interest in construction while working a summer job for a plumber in high school. His interest in construction grew during his time at Hillsdale College, where he spent his summers, weekends, breaks, and most free minutes working construction jobs. History degree in hand, he helped found and operate A Few Good Men, a construction services non-profit in southern Michigan. He went on to run his own general construction company, TK Builders, specializing in residential remodeling and new construction. While operating A Few Good Men and TK Builders, Thomas got first hand experience of generational construction failures. This drove him to become increasingly interested in the field of building science and the question of how to build better. After a move back to Columbus to be close to family, he worked as the Director of Construction at The Cleary Company—a luxury custom remodeler in Columbus. A few more years of fixing building failures pushed him to get ahead of the problems and align his career with this vision. Today, Thomas is the Regional Sales Manager for Huber Engineered Woods, the makers of ZIP System, Advantech, and Exacor. Thomas, his wife, and their 4 children (plus an Australian Shepherd) reside in Westerville.

Panelist: Dan Troth from Green Tech Construction
Dan moved from New York City back to his home state of Ohio in 1991 where he joined two Akron architects as they created ReBarn to repurpose Ohio’s historic barns into homes. Very popular on the east coast with folks like Steven Spielberg but not so much in Ohio back then. With a construction background, he dove into residential construction building custom homes. Through his association with the Timber Framers Guild, he learned of the insulation value of Structural Insulation Panels (SIPS) where savings of 50% or more were achievable. He utilized them when building his own home, an historic barn built in 1828 which he moved and reassembled in Delaware County in 2000. He has since used SIPS on timber frame homes as well as others that are framed totally with them as opposed to studs.
He is registered as a Master SIP Builder with the Structural Insulation Panel Association, a Certified Green Professional with the NAHB and is a Partner in the Department of Energy Zero Energy Ready Home Program. With a life-long passion for historic barns he became a founding member and current VP of Friends of Ohio Barns, a 501c3 devoted to preserving and celebrating our remaining barns and to that end helped, with the passage of Senate Bill 86, to make the barn Ohio’s official historical architectural structure.
