Central Ohio thrives as a socio-economic and healthcare “bubble” with an abundance of resources, including a significant concentration of inpatient beds, surpassing even major national hubs. Yet, this starkly contrasts with the healthcare disparities faced by many other Ohio counties, including rural areas with no hospitals at all. Despite its healthcare advantages, Central Ohio grapples with internal challenges, such as persistent food deserts located alarmingly close to its premier hospitals. This juxtaposition highlights the complexities of healthcare access both within and beyond the “bubble.”

Beyond Medicine: Addressing the Social Determinants of Health
The social determinants of health play a critical role in shaping health outcomes, often outweighing clinical care in their impact. In Ohio, factors such as economic stability, food security, housing, transportation, and education contribute to stark health disparities—challenges that extend beyond traditional healthcare systems. This discussion will explore the key drivers of these disparities, highlight innovative partnerships working to address them, and identify opportunities for research and resources that could improve Ohio’s health rankings according to the Health Policy Institute. By understanding and addressing these root causes, we can move toward a more equitable and sustainable healthcare landscape.

Meeting the Need: Healthcare’s Response to Social Determinants
Healthcare facilities across Ohio are increasingly called upon to address the social determinants of health—factors that shape patient outcomes far beyond the exam room.
